James Rosenquit F-111

Rosenquist exhibits F-111 in the Museum of Modern Art.  He started painting it in 1964 and was inspired by billboard advertisements and mural sized paintings.  F-111 is 86 feet long and consists of 23 large panels.  he used oil paint on aluminum panels.   he uses bright colors and collage like imagery.  Rosenquist concept was to take the F-111 fighter bomber plane, the most technologically advanced weapon in development at the time he began the piece and bring it through time. “Flying through the flak of consumer society to question the collusion between the Vietnam death machine, consumerism, the media, and advertising.”  F-111 is exhibited there January 25th through July 30th.

Diego Rivera

Diego Rivera has work currently showing at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).  Specifically for the exhibit, Rivera created eight “portable murals” to she shown.  His pieces are large blocks of frescoed plaster, slaked lime, and wood.  Also included in the exhibit are sketches and charcoals he created.  five of the murals focus on Mexican subjects with themes of revolution and class inequity. The other three are New York inspired showing class and social structure.  One of the the Mexican themed murals is a scene of a mexican fiesta.  Rivera uses bold color and strong visible brush strokes to paint the native people.   The exhibot can be seen at the MoMA from November 13th 2011 to May 14th 2012.

The 5 Obstructions

I found this movie to be interesting.  Lars posed many obstructions that were challenging and made Jorgen step outside of his comfort zone.  He helped him to get out of his slump.    My favorite obstructions was the 4th obstruction where he had to make his movie a cartoon.  I like how they used all footage they had already shot, but with an entirely new narrative script.  It helped to explain what Jorgen was thinking and explained the mindset behind the videos.  Jorgen and the cartoon artist he worked with did a great job of turing the video into cartoon and making the people still look so realistic.  I liked that neither Lars or Jorgen liked cartoons and even if it came out badly (as lars was hoping it would), they would have been pushed outside of what they normally do and like. I have mixed feelings about the third obstruction.  It was interesting to see what Jorgen thought of as the most miserable place, because it was tied to a horrible memory he had from there.  It was very ingenious to shoot the meal scene in front of a transparent screen showing the street and poor people behind.   However i don’t think i’d be able to have shot that seen.  Eating expensive food and drinking wine while all those poor hungry children watched. It did have a strong message of what is perfection though and i liked the way that came across.

The installation, entitled The Obliteration Room, is part of Kusama’s Look Now, See Forever exhibition that runs through March 12.

Kendra Ferreira

Bristol Art Gallery located on Hope Street in Bristol features over a dozen artists.  Kendra Ferreira is one of the featured artists.  The gallery shows many of her exquisite drawings and paintings.  Her work is done though many mediums including oil, pastels, and watercolor.  However she prefers colored pencils above the rest.  Her subjects are often still life or shoreline scenes. Ferreira is able to capture her subjects so realistically with colored pencils, the viewer is unaware of the materials she is using.  She is able to achieve a variety of textures, color and a luminous appearance using colored pencils.  Her work will continue to be shown at Bristol Art Gallery and can be seen during gallery hours.
